Night Clouds Over Vancouver

There is a terrible and wonderful dream swirling above our sleeping heads.

Long-Exposure English Bay

I have been so lucky to have English Bay as my long suffering model; putting up with my changes in style and never complaining about the way I make it look.

Autumn in Monochrome

I guess autumn is famous for its colours but I have been seeing it in Black & White this year. This has a slight tone so it is not truly black & white.

Fraser River Dock

Okay, so maybe I haven't gotten down to the business of preparing for the show. But I did get out. And it was the west coast at its moody best.

Stanley Park: Part 2

The story starts the day before when I took some pictures of a cut glass canter in a backlit window and realized I should charge my batteries. I took them out of the camera and put in the replacements which, I realized later, were very close to drained as well. By the time they were charged Katherine was asleep so I couldn't get my camera out of the closet to put them in the spare battery pocket of my camera bag. Knowing my memory is far from perfect I left them by my computer with the intention of seeing them when I checked my email and putting them in the bag. Of course, when I woke up and decided to go on a photo safari, I didn't have time to use the computer and didn't see the batteries. You can see where this is going. Getting to the magically lit Stanley Park I started taking pictures with my DSLR only to run out of power. I found some batteries in my flash kit and used those but they only had enough juice for a few more shots. I took out my Panasonic point & shoot and fired away until it too was spent. I guess I am grateful to have gotten up early and taken the shots I did. Oh well ...

Robyn Cumming & Greg Girard

I am recuperating from a bug and it gave me a few moments to go through old files. Here are three B&W's I pulled out.
I've been watching a program on the Knowledge Network called, Aperture: Snapshot - The Art Of Photography. I am including links to two of the recently featured Canadian photographers. I love the way an artist's creative personality develops and blossoms in their medium. I also enjoy the fact that I can appreciate different styles (different from mine; different from each other) without needing to justify my tastes. I am of that age. Here is Robyn Cumming and Greg Girard. Girard's work really appeals to me, both aesthetically and as social documentary, but I am also given a shot of energy from Cumming's photos. She uses people from her life as models and uses her apartment as a studio. Her personality is on display in her photos.

Spring

A kind of art nouveau moment in Vancouver's early, glorious spring.

Tree Stump Graveyard

This is a pool that was the result of hight tides and heavy rain. The water does not usually get to this level. It's near Locarno Beach.

Urban Landscape

Sometimes the world looks like an old man; unshaven, unwashed and worn down by too much hard work, worries and liquor.

Boxing Day

It was a misty morning and this scene was at Jericho. It has a feeling of the Regency era; Jane Austen or Sir Walter Scott.

Pitt River Revisited

I posted a picture of the Pitt River a while back. That was the east side of the bridge. This is the west. Don't forget to look behind you. There's usually something worth seeing.

Pitt River Revisited

I finally got around to figuring out the latest Photoshop High Dynamic Range tool. If you have a tripod, and the time to take two or more photos of the same scene, you can get greater control of your depth of field and exposure.
