Walking Granville Bridge

I love the view from a bridge, especially during weather. Walking north on the east side of the Granville Bridge.

Spring

I did something I used to do a lot more often; I grabbed the camera, went for a walk and took pictures of the spring flowers. Great art? Debatable. Great pleasure? Definitely.

More Long Beach

The camera can capture the beauty of Long Beach but it is hard to capture the energy that is created by the wind and the water and the sun when you stand at the edge of the ocean.

Tony Salo

This entry is dedicated to my good friend Tony Salo who taught me to enjoy the day, "because we don't know how many we have", and to never hesitate to tell someone that you love them, "because you might not get another chance". That is Tony on the right, about to teach me a lesson in playing golf. Tony passed away today.

Long Beach - Long Exposure

I am finding that the photos I am getting with long exposure techniques are an interesting blend of intention and unpredictability.

The Swimmer

I don't think I have put this on a blog before and it was probably because I didn't think the scale would translate well on a computer screen. This is the image I had up at Truth & Beauty Gallery for the group show, 'Witness'. Make sure to click on it if you want to see a larger version.

Peppa Martin, who runs the gallery/studio, did a great job of curating the show. This image is in a run of ten prints at 25" x 38". The one hanging in the show sold on the opening night. There are nine left. They will be printed on Kodak matte archival paper using a lightjet process. I can be contacted though my e-mail jimfriesen53@gmail.com regarding purchase details.

English Bay & Alterpiece Art

I sometimes get extraordinary links from Art Knowledge News. This one is absolutely beautiful.

I saw the movie "Andrei Rublev", by Tarkovsky a few weeks ago. The three and a half hours raced by. Rublev was a 15th century icon painter. It ends with a statement/question about black and white and color. Apparently you can watch Tarkovsky on-line without pirating it.

Long-Exposure English Bay

I have been so lucky to have English Bay as my long suffering model; putting up with my changes in style and never complaining about the way I make it look.

Invitation to WITNESS

I hope any of you reading this who are in, or going to be in, the Vancouver area will please come by the opening on the evening of Thursday, March 1st. If you can't make it that night, call me and maybe I can meet you there during gallery hours. I'm very pleased to be part of this show.

Francesca Woodman & Chloe

I was scanning my black & white negatives when I came across another tree portrait that I couldn't help but colour. I thought it a good opportunity to display a photographer I recently discovered, Francesca Woodman, and a lovely blog that featured a photo by that photographer. Francesca died at the age of 22.

Okuyama Print

Katherine & I happened to be in a thrift store, dropping off stuff, trying to reclaim some space in our home, when I saw this sitting on a pile of old photos. It is not a photo, of course, but a woodblock print by Gihachiro Okuyama. He lived during the first half of the 20th century. I paid two dollars for the print.

It is humbling to think of the years of dedication to a craft, only to be left on a discard pile in a thrift store. I feel very lucky to have found it.

Birch Tree - Tinted

Winter is a good time for scanning old film to digital. I couldn't help throwing some colour into this black & white image.

Etta James

Katherine tells me that someone once said, "All art aspires to music." If that is true, I know I aspire to the kind of feeling Etta James regularly attained. She passed away the other day.

Iona Grass

I didn't get the early morning light but the sun was low enough long enough that I managed to have a glorious morning wandering my favorite place and, once again, finding something I thought worthwhile.
